Education Scholarships

UFCW Local 1059, in cooperation with the UFCW Local 1059 Executive Board, awards fourteen $1,500 college scholarships each school year. A fifteenth scholarship is funded by American Income Life. In addition, five “Textbook” scholarships of $400 are also awarded.

President Quickel said “It is a great honor for Local 1059 to be able to help members or their children obtain a college education.”

Scholarship applications are available online. Applications should not be sent in prior to the publication of the January/February UnionWize. Winners will be selected in a random drawing.

Members in continuous good standing for at least 90 days immediately preceding April 1, or their dependent, are eligible to apply subject to the following provisions.

Scholarship Eligibility

  1. Applicants must submit proof of enrollment (transcripts, enrollment letter, etc.) in an accredited college, university, community college or recognized trade school.
  2. Applicants must submit a letter of commendation from a teacher, principal or professor on school letterhead with the scholarship application.
  3. Applicants must submit a photograph of themselves for publication in a future UnionWize should they win. Digital photos are preferred and may be e-mailed to scholarship[at]ufcw1059[dot]com.
  4. Applicants may not receive more than two UFCW 1059 scholarship awards during their scholastic career.

Scholarship winners are drawn at random during the annual Stewards Conference. The first fifteen winners drawn will be awarded $1,500 scholarships with the following five winners receiving $400 “Textbook” scholarships.

Each scholarship is paid in one installment by providing a current tuition bill to the Union (note: “Textbook” scholarships require only proof of tuition without regard to the purchase of any textbooks).
